What Can Get Rid of My Sunspots?
If you’ve spent much time in the sun, chances are that you have developed a few sunspots - those flat, brown spots that appear on your skin when it’s exposed to much sun. (They’re sometimes called liver spots even though they don’t have anything to do with your liver, or age spots.)
They aren’t harmful or cancerous, and they don’t have any ill effect on you or your skin, but you may want to remove them for cosmetic reasons.
At Skin Med Spa, we’ve treated more sunspots than you can count. If you’re ready to say goodbye to your sunspots, here are a few of our recommendations on how best to get rid of them.
At-home treatments
If you want to try to treat your sunspots at home, here are a few remedies that may work:
- Aloe vera contains active compounds that lighten hyperpigmented spots on your skin.
- Licorice extract is a common ingredient in many over-the-counter sunspot creams because it has been shown to lighten skin discoloration that has been caused by the sun.
- Vitamins C and E play two roles: They help protect your skin from the sun, and they have also been shown to lighten sunspots.
- Black and green tea have both been shown to provide skin lightening effects as well.
If you’ve tried these methods and haven’t seen the kind of results you were seeking, it’s likely time to bring in the big guns of professional treatment.
Professional treatments
Health care professionals use several different methods to treat sunspots, including laser resurfacing, chemical peels, cryotherapy, and microneedling. One of the most effective treatments you can find in a doctor’s office, though, is called Intense Pulsed Light, or IPL, which gets rid of sunspots by heating and destroying the melanin in the spot with pulses of light energy.
At Skin Med Spa, we use the Lumenis® Optima™ IPL Photorejuvenation treatment to remove your sunspot imperfections while also stimulating the production of collagen and elastic fibers to jump start the healing process in your skin.
This photorejuvenation technique uses a broad spectrum of light to effectively remove your sunspots. Each session is around 30 minutes, and you may need multiple sessions to get the full effect.
If you’re ready to try a professional sunspot treatment from one of the best teams around, call the Skin Med Spa office, or book your own appointment with our convenient online scheduler.
